Compass Biodiversity Information System

The Compass Biodiversity Information System is a comprehensive, world-leading data mapping and management system which stores, manages and presents animal and plant biological records. The data, which supports evidence-based assessments of biodiversity, is made available in formats useful to planners, researchers, government and non-governmental organisations, and to the public.

Data Mapping and Management System Features

National Biodiversity Data Centre

  • Data presentation with an easy-to-use visual mapping interface
  • Simultaneous handling of land- and sea-based records
  • Ability to view a number of species simultaneously, and can explore overlap between species for coincidence mapping
  • Time filtering of data to detect presence of species over a number of years or for a particular time of year
  • Presentation of data at various resolutions dependant on user permissions
  • Ability to add supporting map layers, e.g. aerial imagery, designated areas and geology
  • Query tools for information on a record, area, designated site basis or other map feature
  • Comprehensive metadata system displaying details on datasets and distribution of records over time
  • Back office tools for loading data into the system from a range of sources, e.g. Excel templates, MapMate, Recorder
  • Tools for serving biological records to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF)
  • Optional hosting with Compass or Cloud hosting facilities

Compass Informatics and the mapping system was nominated for the “Public Web Application” award category  at the 2013 Esri Partner Conference (EPC) held March 2013 in Palm Springs, California, where partners are recognised for developing and delivering quality Esri software-based solutions or services in nine categories.

At the GIS Ireland 2012 conference, held on 11 October 2012 in Dublin, IRLOGI, the national geographic information association for Ireland, awarded its ‘Business Case and Return on Investment’ Award to the Heritage Council and National Biodiversity Data Centre, which is operated by Compass Informatics Limited, under contract to the Heritage Council.
